2021 Arbor Day Tree Planting

The Village of New Glarus has proclaimed April 30, 2021 as ARBOR DAY.  Planting for 2021 took place with volunteers under the direction of Forster, Paul Jennrich on September 24, 2021.  The Village Board urges all citizens to support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to support our community forestry programs and encourages citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.

The Village of New Glarus is proud to have been recognized as Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways.  Thank you to all the volunteers!!

Emerald Ash Borer

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently confirmed the presence of the insect Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) within an ash tree in the Village limits.  According to the DNR, EAB is an invasive, wood boring beetle that kills ash trees by feeding on the inner bark and starving the tree.  More information on the Emerald Ash Borer in Wisconsin can be found at http://datcpservices.wisconsin.gov/eab/index.jsp.  The Village has taken proactive steps to address the situation, include establishing a cost-share program for EAB treatment for residents with ash trees in the street terrace area.  For more information, please click HERE.

 Annual Arbor Day Tree Planting

Thank you to Paul Jennrich, Village Forester for all you do to promote the planting, growth and health of the trees in the Village of New Glarus. Thank you to all those who volunteer on tree planting day to help get the trees planted and to those preparing and serving lunch! Thank you to the Public Works staff for making sure the utilities are marked and for digging the holes for the trees. What a great community effort!!

Street Trees Available to New Glarus Residents

Village of New Glarus property owners interested in getting new terrace trees are invited to participate in the village’s Annual Arbor Day Tree Planting. The tree planting occurs each April or May.

Under the planting program, property owners purchase trees from the village for a minimal cost. The trees are planted by local high school and adult volunteers. The trees available for purchase come from a reputable nursery and are 6 to 8 feet tall, with a trunk diameter of approximately one inch. Residents can choose the kind of tree planted in their terraces from a variety of choices provided by the village forester.

Since the Arbor Day program began in 1997, over 620 trees have been planted in New Glarus street terraces and parks.

Anyone interested in more information about purchasing trees or volunteering to plant should call the Village Forester, Paul Jennrich, at 527-5833.

New Glarus Named Tree City USA

New Glarus has been named a 2019 Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. It is the 24th year New Glarus has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, the Tree City program is designed to recognize communities that effectively manage their public tree resources.

New Glarus has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community:  a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
